RAYMOND Lahey, the disgraced Roman Catholic bishop who admitted he was addicted to looking at child pornography, will be released from prison after being sentenced to time served.

He was sentenced Wednesday to 15 months in prison and two years probation but will receive a two-for-one credit for time served. Lahey pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography for the purposes of importation to Canada.

Lahey, 71, a Newfoundlander and former head of the Diocese of Antigonish in Nova Scotia, was caught in 2009 at Ottawa’s airport after authorities checked his personal computer and found a large cache of child pornography.

Child abuse in Vietnam ‘on the rise’

Child abuse in Vietnam ‘on the rise’ thumbnailCHILD abuse in Vietnam is on the rise and becoming more widespread according to a government report released last week.

The Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs claimed that 3,422 cases recorded between 2008 and 2010 were significantly higher than in previous estimates, although previous figures were not available.

“Child abuse has been on the increase and is taking place in public places, the home, schools and children’s centers across the country,” the report said.
Victims have reportedly suffered serious sexual and physical abuses, emotional violence, or are being trafficked, kidnapped and forced to commit crimes, it continued.

Child taken to hospital; Mother charged with abuse

SHELBY, N.C. —
A 2-year-old girl was taken to the hospital with injuries to her head and face last month, and now her mother faces felony child abuse charges, according to Shelby police.
According to a police report, Ashley Diaz-Serpas, 25, of 505 W. Warren St., called 911 on Jan. 23 to report that her 2-year-old daughter had fallen the day before and her head was swelling.
“Diaz-Serpas … stated that her daughter fell out of the kitchen chair and now the daughter’s head was swelling,” the report states. “There was apparent swelling and bruising on the child’s face, and EMS transported the child and mother to the ER.”
The mother told police that she didn’t notice any injuries after her daughter fell, but the next day, when her husband came home, the girl complained that her head was hurting.
According to police, the girl also had bruises on her back and arms, which the mother attributed to a fall at the Shelby City Park.

With Teachers’ Aide Accused of Abuse, Parents Are Seeking Answers

A day after a teacher’s aide at a prestigious Upper West Side elementary school was arrested on charges that he sexually abused an 8-year-old student, anxious parents were readying to pepper school officials and prosecutors with questions about the aide’s troubled past.
Scores of parents of students at Public School 87 were furiously exchanging e-mails on Saturday as the aide, Gregory Atkins, 56, was arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court on charges of sexual abuse, attempted criminal sex act and endangering the welfare of a child.
“Who knew what, when?” said Kevin L. Krim, 37, whose daughter attends kindergarten at the school. “They have to be held accountable for this.”

Michael - a Pedophile’s Story

There is the light blue painted metal door in the basement, behind which the sour-looking 35-year-old Michael (Michael Fuith) has imprisoned Wolfgang (David Rauchenberger), a sullen 10-year-old. There is Wolfgang’s single bed, which is replaced at one point with double-decker bunk beds.

One reason these images become etched in your mind is that the film puts you in the shoes of the perpetrator and, to a lesser degree, of his captive. They are acutely aware of the other’s proximity and of the possibilities for escape.

Abuse Cases Put Los Angeles Schools Under Fire

LOS ANGELES — The arrest of a public school teacher here early this month came with plenty of vivid details, thanks to hundreds of photographs that the police say show the teacher covering the eyes and mouths of children with tape and allowing cockroaches to crawl over faces.
Those accusations alone were enough to prompt outrage. But more came: Another teacher at the same school was arrested on charges of sexually abusing children. Then came news reports that two aides at the school had been fired after being accused of abuse, and that one had been sentenced to 15 years in prison.
